The whole field of alien legislation and residence permits has become a great deal more complicated during the past few years. Nowadays, not only national legislation has to be taken into consideration, but also the effects of European directives and legislation as well as in certain cases existing bi-national agreements between Germany and the home state of the person concerned. It is getting more and more difficult for those responsible to recognize what constitutes legal or illegal residence, or whether the person concerned is entitled to take up employment or what are the correct and necessary steps to be taken.

The immigration of dependants to join employees working here may not attract as much attention but that does not mean that it is less problematic. Experience has shown that the frequently recurring problems put a great deal of strain on employees and lead to (avoidable) time off work or lower productivity.
